Creating A Coastal Oasis
When a family living out of state purchased a home in Jacksonville, their vision was clear: to transform the outdated house into a coastal oasis. This second home needed to be an airy, comfortable retreat where friends and family could gather. The project was a full-scale renovation, including a completely new kitchen, fresh flooring, a master bathroom update, and all-new furnishings.
The Problem: A Home that Lacked Light and Flow
The original house was a maze of dated design choices. The kitchen was dark, with broken cabinetry, old flooring, and a tiny, awkward island that made the space feel cramped. The living area was dim and uninviting, featuring an outdated fireplace and old carpet. In the master suite, the bathroom suffered from outdated cabinetry and mirrors, while the bedroom felt heavy and disconnected from the rest of the home. The entire house lacked a cohesive, light-filled aesthetic.
The Solution: A Strategic Renovation for an Airy, Coastal Feel
Our solution was a full-home renovation focused on creating a seamless, airy feel. We began by gutting the kitchen and replacing the first-floor flooring with a large format tile for a consistent, open look. To improve flow, we removed the tiny island and installed white shaker cabinets and a white quartz countertop with subtle veining for a classic coastal look. We added texture with a stacked stone backsplash in soft grays and warmth with open shelving and wood paneling on the peninsula. We also created a dedicated bar area with wine coolers for entertaining. Coastal elements were introduced through a light blue painted chandelier, bamboo bar stools, and woven roman shades.
In the living space, we painted the entire home a bright white with gray undertones and replaced the carpet with a medium-toned wood floor that flowed into the dining room and master bedroom. We updated the dark fireplace with a stacked stone surround in light neutral tones to brighten the room and add a coastal touch. New furniture in neutral tones, along with pops of blue, created a casual and relaxing atmosphere.
For the master bathroom, we worked with the existing tub and shower. We had the tub refinished and installed a new shower door. We chose a wood-look tile with varying widths for a beachy vibe and installed new shaker vanities with white quartz counters and open shelving to add warmth. In the master bedroom, we installed plantation shutters for privacy and selected furniture in complementary wood tones. We finished the space with a seating nook featuring a blue velvet swivel chair and added new glass lamps and a woven rug for texture.
The final result is a true coastal oasis—a home that is bright, functional, and perfectly suited for creating lasting memories by the beach.
